The most common heart problem in cats is called Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM).
With HCM the walls of the heart become thick and stiffen, making blood flow very difficult. Some HCM signs to look for: Rapid or difficult (labored) breathing; cough; loss of energy; loss of appetite; loss of weight; sudden paralysis, especially of the hind limbs.
