Similar to the human HIV virus, FIV causes an infectious disease in domestic cats. It attacks the cat's immune system, weakening the animal, making it susceptible to infections and diseases that normally don´t affect healthy cats.
Aggressive cats that roam and fight are at the highest risk for the disease because FIV is spread through deep penetrating bits. And like HIV, an FIV infected cat can be healthy for many years before suffering from the effects of the disease.
